Creativity — the fuel behind software development

We build our professional careers on all kinds of pillars — soft skills, hard skills, inspiration, perspiration, it’s never a one-directional journey. Moreover, access to education and the diversity of resources we have at hand at the moment can enable a smoother career transition than ever before.
At Sensidev, we have the pleasure to work with developers from a wide range of backgrounds, and their stories get even more interesting with each new member. Transitioning to tech may be more at hand, but nobody said it was easy, so we want to get to the roots of their new career choices and see what drives them the most. And the answers never cease to surprise us — George Sava, our new React Developer, is fuelled by creativity.
Find out all out it 👇
1. Where did you work before/ what is your other professional background?
I worked in the Music Industry for 12 years as a Music Producer with artists like DJ Project, Elena Gheorghe, Nicoleta Nuca, INNA, Soundland, Gino X Maxx, Dara, Mark Stam, and more; a live Guitar Performer with various music bands, and also I was a music and guitar teacher at multiple private music schools in Bucharest.
2. What was your first step in transitioning to tech? And what triggered the idea of a career in this industry?
I started looking into how to build a personal website for my work, a little before the Covid pandemic started. During the pandemic period, I had a lot of time on my hands because my industry was hit quite hard, and I had no concerts, the studio income dropped drastically and also restrictions in the teaching environment made it hard for me to continue teaching. So I decided that I needed to develop new skills, and I took all that free time and put it into learning and exploring web development and tech more deeply.
3. They say the best skills are transferable skills, especially when transitioning from one department to another or from one career to another. Which are the prevailing transferable skills that stood by your career transition?
I think, for me, it is my creativity. I’m a creative person by nature, and I like to bring value to the world around me (this is one of my drives for developing myself).
4. There are a lot of programming languages out there and many job paths to pursue. How did you choose yours?
Well, it was hard because I tried a lot of different programming languages in order to get a better understanding of the development process and all of its stages. But I found that I was drawn, even from the start, to code that rendered stuff on the screen and that I can make all kinds of goofy, fun creative stuff with it. So I guess Frontend Development was a good match for me.
5. If it were to make a mini step-by-step guide for somebody experiencing the same needs as you did (when you took the decision to go into a different career), what would this look like?
→ Study the industry/job market you wish to enter.
→ Make peace with the fact that this is a process, and you have to fail first before you succeed.
→ Start small and keep going daily, even if it’s hard, or you don’t feel like doing the work. 1% is better than 0%.
→ Don’t be afraid to test the market and get some feedback from some job interviews in order to see your weak points, so that you can work on them.
→ Be positive and never give up.
6. Name a skill that is 100% needed in a tech career 🐱💻
Patience and a good eye for details.
7. Does the current career path better align with your values and goals? Why or why not?
I think that it complements my other values, making me understand better the mechanisms that govern the world around us. Also, I see that there is a need for creative persons in this space, and I’m happy that I can be a part of a community that is doing so.
8. Anything else you'd like to share with us?
Just that I’m glad to be here working with this wonderful team and I hope that I can become a great asset in the future :D
Transitioning into tech is possible at almost any age and previous career path if you have the drive and perspective for this industry.
